International Festival

All-Star of the Week
This week we enjoyed getting to know Simran as our All-Star.  In her share sack she brought a magnet from the tallest building in the world that is located in Dubai.  She also brought in pinch pot pottery and a beautiful painting that she made in 1st grade.  Simran read some of 'Summer Vacation from the Black Lagoon' as her favorite book.  On Thursday her mom was able to join her for a tasty lunch.

International Festival and Taste fest
Here are several pictures from our fabulous event...plus a couple of cute little boys who also enjoyed the international cuisine.  I tried to get an individual picture of each student in front of the food he/she made, but some were already visiting and enjoying foods from other countries.  Such an amazing evening had by all!

Weekly Update

All-Star of the Week
Andrzej was our Awesome All-Star last week!  He shared several of his favorite items on Monday, including his presidential coin collection, a Minion light and music player, and an Army bear in honor of his dad and grandpa.  Andrzej also read aloud his favorite book and enjoyed a special lunch with his lunch buddy.  The class had many nice things to say about Andrzej when they wrote compliments to him on Friday.

Math Workshop
We finished up Unit 6 lessons.  We continued to review area and perimeter.  Students need to understand area measures the space inside of a shape.  We can find area using the formula length x width.  Perimeter is the distance around the outside of a shape.  We can find perimeter using the formula length + width + length + width.  Students also worked on their Zoo Projects.  These projects were assigned to students to give more practice with area and perimeter.  Students are creating their own zoo.  They needed to create a blueprint on graph paper with six animal habitats and other zoo features, such as gift shop, snack stand, restrooms, etc.  Then they needed to find the area and perimeter of each of the items on their blueprint.  The final products will come home once they've finished.

Research Workshop
Students are working hard to transfer all of their paragraphs written in their rough draft booklets into their final drafts of their country reports.  They are also working to include colorful illustrations.  We've been practicing for the International Festival as well.  Students need to have their fact memorized by Thursday.  We will continue to practice our songs and speaking parts this week so we are ready for our audience on Thursday!  We look forward to sharing our performance with you!

M-Step Practice
We have been practicing how to login to the M-Step Online Test.  We have been practicing with the keyboards and stylus pens as well.  Students have practiced ELA test questions and math test questions.

Troy Fire Department Visit

The Troy Fire Department visited Hill.  A fire fighter talked to our class and reminded us to check the batteries in our smoke detectors.  He also talked about the importance of practicing fire drills at home and coming up with a safe meeting spot for the family.  Next we went outside to the smokehouse.  We practiced escaping from a smoky room.  Students got down low and crawled out.  First a student checked the door with the back of his hand before opening it.  Finally we all met at the Hill sign as our safe meeting spot.

Mystery Readers

Thank you so much to each of you who volunteered your time to come into our classroom last month and read.  Students enjoyed listening to someone other than their teacher read aloud.  They also enjoyed guessing who the mystery reader might be each time.  Below are pictures of the last two mystery readers who visited our classroom.
