Grandparent's and Special Person's Day

All-Star of the Week:  This week we got to know our newest team member, Saichakrika, who joined our class shortly before the International Festival.  She shared several items with us on Monday including a stuffed animal bunny, a necklace from Chuck E Cheese and bracelets from India's Independence Day celebration.  On Tuesday Saichakrika enjoyed her father as a lunch buddy and on Thursday she shared her favorite book with us.  We enjoyed getting to know Saichakrika more as a Room 13 All-Star!

Grandparent's and Special Person's Day:  What a fantastic event we had this year!  Thank you to all of the grandparents and special people that were able to join us.  We even had some visitors from out of state.  Yaseen's aunt was visiting us from Arizona and Braeden's grandparents were here from New York!  Everyone enjoyed a fun filled morning showing off what we do at school each day along with some tasty breakfast treats and music from the International Festival.  Thank you to everyone who donated some items or food to help make this day so special.

Weekly Update

Congratulations to Kyndall, Mariana, and Aastha (she was ahead of us so we missed her in the picture)!  They ran the Girls on the Run 5k this morning.  They did a great job keeping pace in the rain.  They finished strong and with a smile on their face!

All-Star of the Week
Owen was our Awesome All-Star last week!  We loved learning more about Owen from his parent letters.  We also liked seeing all of his pictures, baby sleep sack, and sports trophies.  Owen enjoyed a special lunch with his dad on Tuesday and his mom on Thursday.  Students had an opportunity to write compliments to Owen on Friday.

Reading Workshop
We have started our final unit of the school year--Character Study.  Students are reading books of their choice from a series to study the characters more closely.  Last week we looked for patterns in our character's behavior and made predictions about what our characters might do next in the story.

Writing Workshop
We have also started our final writing unit of the year--Fairy Tales.  We have discussed ways authors adapt fairy tales and have studied several different adaptations.  Students have also learned how to write their own adaptation and have written an adaptation of the classic fairy tale, Cinderella.  In the first set of pictures below, students are acting out scenes for their adaptations before writing.  In the second set of pictures, students are reading parts of their adaptations aloud.

Math Workshop
Students continued to practice solving word problems.  We focused on solving two-step word problems.  We will wrap up this unit at the end of next week.  Look for the unit review to come home tomorrow afternoon.  It will be due on Thursday.

Science
We have discussed the importance of  a standard unit of measurement.  We also reviewed how to measure objects using a balance scale.  First we made estimates before measuring each object in grams.  Finally we reviewed how to use a tape measure.  Students worked together to measure different lengths, widths, and distance around.

Greenfield Village

All-Star of the Week  This week we enjoyed getting to know Brynlee more as she shared all about her life with us.  On Monday she shared many items with us including a stuffed animal wolf from Great Wolf Lodge, a pink blanket she has had forever and a soccer trophy the received the day her little brother was born.  She also shared many family pictures that we enjoyed seeing throughout the week.  Brynlee read 'A Weekend with Wendell' by Kevin Henkes as her favorite book.  Kevin Henkes is a favorite author of our class too!  On Friday her mom was able to join her at school for a special lunch to finish off her All-Star week!

Greenfield Village  We had the most amazing day at Greenfield Village!  The sun was shining and there was just enough of a breeze to prevent anyone from getting too toasty.  All the animals were out and Greenfield Village staff were enjoying the questions and conversation with the students.  Thank you to all parents who were able to join us on this beautiful day!

M-Step - We are officially done with the 3rd Grade M-Step testing for the year.  The tests proved to be a bit longer than anticipated, but students worked diligently throughout the time we needed to take them.  They enjoyed a nice popsicle treat on Friday afternoon courtesy of the Bhatt family!
