Weekly Update

All-Star of the Week: Daniella B.
Daniella was our amazing all-star this week.  She started off the week by bringing in her favorite stuffed bunny, a blanket her mom had made her, a snow globe, a bracelet and a pillowcase that she made.  She also read her favorite book to the class titled Dork Diaries: Tale of a Not-So Perfect PrincessHer expression during reading made the students laugh at the humorous parts of the story---Daniella is one great storyteller!!!

Poetry Workshop:
This week we focused on the following main strategies in poetry workshop.
Alliteration
Shape Poems
Organization
Building Comprehension with Inferences
Here you see Audrey finding alliteration within our mentor texts during our poetry workshop mini-lesson.

Students then looked in their poetry anthologies to find examples of alliteration.

Mark and Hannah looking for examples of alliteration in their poetry anthology.
After writing conferences, these students were recognized for taking a risk and implementing alliteration in their own poems during writing time.

Below you will see partnerships using their 5-senses chart to plan their writing for their Shape Poems.  Then, they shared their poems with their poetry partners.

Greenfield Village Field Trip:
Thank you to the parents who chaperoned our very hot field trip day! We appreciate you spending the afternoon with us!

Social Studies:
We finished our Southwest Region stops and read a chapter in our textbook that went into more depth about The Alamo and how Texas fought for its independence.  Students then used a graphic organizer to pick out the main ideas from the text to help them determine which facts were important from the text and which facts were interesting.

The social studies review for the Southwest Region came home on 5/25.  The quizlet link was also emailed to your child's school email address.  Please use both of these tools to study for the test on Wednesday, June 1st.
